Club Projects
Here are some of the recent projects undertaken by the Kinsale & District Lions club.
Cork City Hospitals Childrens' Club.
This is an initiative which sees groups of sick children taken to Fota where they enter a Christmas wonderland of brightly lighted Christmas trees, decorations, toys and games. They are entertained by clowns and storybook characters, face painting, and best of all a visit to Santa Claus' cave.Attended by his elves Santa (aka Lion Bernard Greaves) talks to each one and they get delightful presents for going home.
The Santa visit is preceeded by party food with many special treats and drinks.
Special thanks to members of the Kinsale Vintage Car Club who took time off to bring the children to Fota, and the very many volunteers who made the event possible.
Lions Club Food Appeal 2009
The Lions Clubs Christmas Food Appeal took place on the 11th. and 12th. December. Both Supervalu and Londis in Kinsale provided space for a collection point, and nearly all club members were involved. The collection this year was an astounding 42% better than in 2008 which shows that those who could contribute realised that the needs were greater than ever before. All of the food and money collected was dispensed to families in Kinsale by the St. Vincent de Paul Society before Christmas.
Tired Lions
There were very tired limbs in Kinsale at the conclusion to the Kinsale Lions Cycle Rally 2009 which took place on the extremely windy Saturday of the Jazz Weekend. It was the second of two events run to enable Kinsale Lions send 42 sick children and their carers to Eurodisney next year.Principal organisers were Lions Ted Whitaker and Bernard Greaves, together with John Looney of the Cork Hospitals Childrens Club.
Starting at Midleton, the group of about two hundred cyclists pedalled from Midleton to the city quays. The naval vessel LE Orla was docked at Albert Quay, and was the focal point of the rally in Cork. Lord Mayor Dara Murphy was on hand to greet the cyclists and acknowledge their efforts on behalf of the sick children. Following lunch there, the group continued to Kinsale. During the event they were accompanied by units of Civil Defence, Gardai, Fire Service and Ambulance Service. With sirens sounding they circulated around the town more than once, while an army of collectors were offered generous donations for the worthy cause.
Many staff from CUH gave free time to ensure the event was a success, helping at Midleton, Cork and in Kinsale.

DEFIBRILLATORS FOR KINSALE
IF DAVY CAN'T DO IT, IT CAN'T BE DUNNEThis was the catchphrase coined at the press launch recently of the campaign to encourage more runners to join this years Cork City Marathon on the June holiday Monday 1st. June next.
Kinsale Lions and Kinsale Red Cross are joining together to raise funds for defibillators to be available in several locations through Kinsale.
Local personality Davy Dunne has volunteered to run his first ever marathon. He is now in serious training for the event, and will be joining veteran marathoner Mary Evans and others from Kinsale.
The success of this fundraising is dependant on YOU, yes YOU reading this, to consider participating in aid of a worthy cause.
Most runners are not athletes in the full sense. Many are joining together in a relay of five or six per team, with each person walking or running five or six miles at whatever pace is comfortable for them. It is a fun way of achieving something useful and it is satisfying to know that your efforts may save a life.
All are welcome to join the campaign. For more information, contact Mary Cronin on 021-477 2192, or on 087-134 7292. The time is now so that you can help and advice to prepare to participate safely.
And if you cannot participate, be generous in filling the green collection boxes which will be in many loacal premises and on the street.

Kinsale Lions aid to Kinsale Day Care Centre
During 2007 the Kinsale & District Lions Club commited to assisting the fund raising efforts for the Kinsale Day Care Centre. As a result, a cheque for €24,000 was presented recently to the committee, which includes Dr.Tom O'Leary, John Thuillier, Matron of Hospital and others. Photo shows Lions President Ted Whitaker handing over the cheque at the Mast on Pier Road, Kinsale. Included are Mayor Evans, with Lions Micháel Hynes, P.J.Power, Richard Laws, Bernard Greaves and Jack Walsh this sum was collected partly at various Lions Club events for local charities, and partly from sponsorship of runners in the 2007 Cork City Marathon, an event strongly supported by our own Mayor of Kinsale, Mary Evans.
The Lions club are drawing special attention to the 2008 Cork City Marathon, being run on holiday Monday 2nd June next. We urge anyone who can walk to enter for at least part of the Marathon, to obtain sponsorship with the Day Care Centre as beneficiary. If you are already in training you can be fit enough for the whole event which is not based on speed but on finishing whatever commitment has been made.
Registration of participants has to be before 11th. May. For full information, and sponsorship cards, please contact Deirdre on 021- 477 2788, or Mary on 087-134 7292.
Kinsale Lions Club want YOU for healthy exercise and fun to aid local charities
The Club is planning to have an increased participation in the Cork City Marathon 2008, being run on Monday 2nd. June next. The renewed Marathon event was a great success on the June Monday of 2007. There were fifty seven participants from Kinsale, all of them supporting local charities through Kinsale Lions, and over €13,000 was raised.
You don't have to be an athlete in training to take part. The fact is that teams of five can enter to do the event in relay, with each team member electing to do a short leg (as little as three miles) or a longer leg, depending on your own level of fitness. So it is especially suited for fun walkers or runners who get the double enjoyment of getting some fun healthy exercise while benefitting deserving local charities.
Now that you are interested, come to an organising meeting which is being held at the Red Cross Centre, Kinsale, on Wednesday March 26th. at 8.30 pm. Come on your own, or in groups, and teams will be put together on the night. It will be an opportunity to make friends, and make plans for whatever level of training is appropriate. There are equal opportunities for people of all ages and genders.
For further information, contact Deirdre on 021-477 2788, or Mary on 087-134 7292.
