Kinsale Lions Club Present Cheques To Caring Charities
Kinsale Lions Club made presentations of significant cheques to caring charities involved with children, adolescents and the elderly on 9th. February 2010.
John Looney was recipient for the CUH Childrens Club which every year takes a group of about forty children, and their carers, to Eurodisney. The children suffer various serious illnesses and disabilities. This trip has become their ray of hope in a world which has none of the health and freedoms enjoyed by most children.
The Matt Talbot Adolescent Services is an organisation wirh a drop-in day centre in Douglas Cork for those in the 14 to 23 years age group who present with problems associated with alcohol or drug abuse. They also provide residential care for a number of boys in a safe environment near Clonakilty. Though funded by a number of state agencies, their grants are never enough to meet the increasing demands on their services. Finbarr Cotter is Chairman of the board of directors, and he spoke with conviction about their project.
Treasurer of the Kinsale Day Care Centre is Dr. Tom O'Leary. He acknowledged the ongoing assistance of the Kinsale Lions in helping to fund the Centre which it is hoped will open later this year. Constructed on the grounds of the Kinsale Community Hospital, it will provide vital support to elderly people in the Kinsale district who are managing to live at home but need a little help There will be excellent dining facilities, rest area, chiropody clinic and hairdressing services available, while the social contact between fellow visitors and staff will be of great value to the clients.
Kinsale Lions President Tony Cierans briefly mentioned the contribution of Lions Clubs around the world to their local communities, just as was happening now in Kinsale. He referred to the untimely deaths of fellow Lions in the Haiti earthquake, and to the quick response of Lions Club International. and Kinsale Lions Club, in donating funds for relief of suffering.
