Kinsale Lions Club Fundraising for Haiti
Immediately the scale of the Haiti earthquake disaster was realised, Kinsale Lions Club donated Euro1000 from its Charity Account, but with a resolve to do more. Following some quick organising, the Lions Table Quiz 2010 took place at Actons Hotel on 11th. February.
Question Master Bernard Greaves challenged the two hundred contestants to show that they knew everything about music and history, geography and science, local faces and places.
Rosaleen O'Regan did a superb job with the audio round which brought back memories of well known singers and themes of the past. A few more minutes of those and there would have been dancing in the aisles.
Lions President Tony Cierans spoke words of welcome and acknowledged the ongoing support in the community for the Lions Club acting as a conduit to help many deserving causes. He mentioned particularly support from new local business Avego Ltd., Kinsale Good Food Circle, other local businesses and those Lions Clubs members who donated various prizes. Mayor of Kinsale Tomás O'Brien (also a Lion) led the team of scrutineers Joan Hurley (Scoremaster), Sheila Gimblett and Anne McCarthy.
Although one team led from start to finish, there were five or six other teams always in close contention, and the outcome was not known until marking of the last round was complete. That round was put together by President Tony, in which contestants had the tough task of putting names to photographs of local personalities whose visible features were limited to their eyes or back of head. There were some interesting answers.
To no one's surprise, the winning team included knowledge powerhouse Seán Hurley, ably supported by Noel Coffey, Niall Twamley and Mossie Crowe.
Best result of all was given by Bernard Greaves before the end of the evening - that including the raffle, over E3,200 was raised for the relief effort Haiti. All of those funds will be swiftly transferred via Lions Clubs International to support the efforts of Lions Club volunteers working at the coalface.
