Busy December 2009

It has been an extremely busy December for Kinsale Lions Club.

First week December saw Lion Secretary Bernard Greaves doing two full days on Santa Clause duty at Fota House for a large group of sick children. Each child entered Santa's den where Santa amazed with knowledge of his or her family. More importantly, he dispensed toys and gifts to the children who were also entertained and fed during the day by the Childrens Sunshine Club.

On Tuesday 8th. December there was a presentation of cheques to local charities in Knsale, which has already been reported.

The Lions Clubs Christmas Food Appeal took place on the 11th. and 12th. December. Both Supervalu and Londis in Kinsale provided space for a collection point, and nearly all club members were involved. The collection this year was an astounding 42% better than in 2008 which shows that those who could contribute realised that the needs were greater than ever before. All of the food and money collected was dispensed to families in Kinsale by the St. Vincent de Paul Society before Christmas.

Billy Crosbie's Kinsale Christmas show took place for nine nights spread over two weeks at the Lord Kingsale venue. It was a truly family type show appealing to adults and children alike. In its second year, it is a great addition to the Kinsale calendar of worthwhile events. The proceeds were donated entirely to Kinsale Lions Club for the benefit of local charities.

The Kinsale Lions Christmas Day Charity Swim ran smoothly again this year under the leadership of Lions Eddie Plunkett and Fintan Lynch. Their principal success was with the weather. Going from heavy frost at 8am, followed by rain and a thaw after 9 am, they produced a bright and sunny day by one o'clock. About five hundred people gathered at the Pier Head to watch over twenty swimmers take to the icy cold water. Most declined to don wet suits and were in serious need of the mulled wine cocktail being dispensed by Eileen Plunkett and Mary O'Neill.
Apart from giving generously, those who came along met family and friends, many of who had travelled home for the special season of Christmas.
